Hear from three foundation leaders in the field that work with donors and grantees to evaluate programs for funding. AFP will lead a discussion to learn about their work, explore the different type of grant applications and how to navigate them. Joining us for the discussion are Bree Bess, Program Officer at BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, Michelle Hardy, VP for Advancement at Central Carolina Community Foundation and Debra Rice, Senior Vice President Philanthropic Services, Specialized Wealth Services at Wells Fargo.
Bree Bess has served as a program officer with the BlueCross BlueShield of
South Carolina Foundation since 2016. In this role, her portfolio of grantmaking focuses on child and adolescent mental health, adverse childhood experiences and building a diverse, high-quality healthcare workforce. She is a strong advocate of trust-based and grantee-centered grantmaking, always aiming to serve as an advocate for her grantees’ needs. She has a master’s degree in Public Administration with an emphasis in nonprofit management from the George H.W. Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University and has spoken on multiple panels and at universities, including Texas A&M and the University of South Carolina, about responding to grantee needs during the pandemic and performance measurement and evaluation in philanthropy. She currently lives in Columbia, SC with her 17 lb. cat, KitKat.
Michelle Hardy is Vice President for Advancement at Central Carolina Community Foundation where she collaborates with individuals, families, and businesses to establish funds to support their giving and increase philanthropic investments in the Midlands and beyond. Previously, she served the University of South Carolina and Newberry College. Michelle grew up in North Augusta, South Carolina, and graduated from Penn State University and the University of South Carolina School of Law. She lives in Columbia with her husband, Mason, and their two daughters, 17 and 15.
Debbie Rice serves as Vice President and Philanthropic Specialist for Wells Fargo Philanthropic Services within The Private Bank. Wells Fargo
Philanthropic Services helps charitable individuals, families, and nonprofit organizations work toward their unique goals by providing specialized advisory services. Debbie helps individuals and families to strategically define and achieve their charitable objectives as part of their overall wealth plans. This may include gift and tax planning, multi-generational planning, estate planning, and the creation and management of donor advised funds, private foundations, charitable trusts, and other charitable planning strategies. She also works extensively with nonprofit organizations, where she advises in the areas of gift planning, endowment management, board governance, and other management issues. Debbie collaborates with her clients and their other advisors to leverage their resources to maximize the impact of their philanthropic activities.
